French Bulldog On Way To Becoming Most Popular Dog - Vets Are Worried! The popular, friendly, Labrador retriever has been Top Dog the world over, but it’s about to be pushed off its number one perch! In 2018 the French bulldog is set to overtake the Labrador retriever as the most popular dog in the UK. Can the rest of the world be far behind?

In the UK, the Labrador retriever has enjoyed the status of boss dawg for nearly 30 years. But according to the premier club which keeps track of Britain’s pedigreed dogs, all that is about to change. The Kennel Club has reported a nearly 50% increase in French bulldog registrations in the last year.

The funny-looking “designer dogs” are all the rage among high-profile celebrities, fueling the dog’s current global appeal. Madonna, Reese Witherspoon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, and the Beckham family have all posted selfies cuddling their beloved Frenchies.

But in spite of their current coolness factor, the Kennel Club cautions owners to think twice before choosing a French bulldog. The loveable, travel-friendly pooches can cost as much as $2,000, in part because the breeding process is risky, with artificial insemination and C-sections common.

Their sweet little smushed faces may be adorable, but those same features are responsible for some not-so-cute problems such as snoring, sniffling, messy eating, and gas caused by too much swallowed air.

Still interested in a Frenchie? That’s fine, but you should also know that the breed comes with the potential for serious health problems, including eye disease, heart problems, obesity, and joint and spinal issues.

And, unlike the sweet and malleable Labs, the Frenchies have a stubborn streak which may add an added element of frustration to training. If you love water sports and plan on taking your dog along for outdoor adventures, be forewarned that most French bulldogs can’t swim!

Their oversized, heavy heads and stubby builds do not lend themselves to water agility, leaving most Frenchies unable to swim and at risk for drowning.

It should come as no surprise then that within the last year the RSPCA has reported a record number of abandoned Frenchies. What seemed like a cute, “portable” dog in the shelter or store, undoubtedly became an unexpected burden once the owner became acquainted with his new bestie.

Still thinking about buying this up-and-trending canine? Don’t be put off by it’s potential for being a high-maintenance animal; the Frenchie can and will be a terrific companion for owners who completely understand their needs and are able to fully care for the endearing dog with the funny little body!
