For almost half a century the sweet-natured, loyal Labrador retriever has been the most popular dog breed in America. Once upon a time, these Newfoundland natives were entrusted by fishermen to pull in nets and gather up stray fish. It’s no surprise then that the lab has an excellent reputation as search-and-rescue dogs. In addition, their mild, people-pleasing persona make them excellent family dogs.
If love inquisitive hounds just like Charlie Brown’s dog, Snoopy, then a smart, cute beagle may be for you! Beagles are curious and determined, with an adorable baying yip rather than a bark. English hunters use groups of tenacious beagles to hunt small game such as rabbits and foxes. If you do decide on a beagle, you have your choice of three color schemes: tricolor, red-and-white and lemon.
The mellow, even-tempered golden retriever is an excellent choice for families with children. This butter-colored canine originated when Lord Tweedmouth bred a yellow retriever with the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Later he added bloodhound and Irish setter genes to the mix resulting in the friendly dog breed we have today.
If you’re looking for a low maintenance dog, look no further than the funny-faced bulldog. The cute, pudgy canine is as recognized for its chunky build as it is for its broad, wrinkly face. Although it was originally used in bull baiting, the breed displays a mellow temperament. In addition, it requires minimal exercise and grooming. If you do pick a bulldog, be aware that the dog’s stout build and short nose causes them to easily overheat in hot weather.
Like the bulldog, short and sturdy dachshunds are a terrific low-maintenance breed. Their small, squat bodies require minimal exercise and those with short hair need minimal grooming. Confident Dachshunds come in both miniature and standard sizes, with fur that ranges from long to short to wiry.
If you can’t bear the thought of being separated from your dog, how about a Yorkshire terrier? This is the adorable dog that no A-lister with a designer handbag can do without! But if you’re more the stay at home type, Yorkies will just as happily cuddle in your lap. They average around 7 pounds, and their long and silky fur is oh-so pettable!

A friend of mine rescues dogs and has a couple dachshunds and they are absolutely adorable.
Ha ha my ideal blog post as I love dogs. My favourite breed from the above is the Yorkshire Terrier. I have two dogs a mad Jack Russell called Tipp and a ladylike chihuahua called Fleur.
Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Dachshunds are my favorite breeds!!! I used to have a pet lab before, she died a few years back and it took me a while to get over that!So someday, i will be ready to get a new puppy!:)
I love dogs, I used to have an English toy terrier. Unfortunately, she died 2 years ago. Miss her so much :-( My friends have labrador, he is so adorable!
I had a dog who passed away a year ago. He was called Pop. I really miss him. Im yet to find a new one. Thanks for educating us on the variety of dogs. It will help me when I make up my mind to find a new Dog.
My boyfriend wants a pug so bad! We live in a big city and everyone here has pugs. I on the other hand, love the Maltese breed. That's what I grew up with!!
We have a little Yorkshire Terrier. She is the cutest and sweetest dog I have ever seen. I didn't like dogs until 5 years ago when I decided that I needed the love and companionship of a little 7 pound bundle of joy! As a little 5 year-old I was overpowered and thrown to the ground by a huge Great Dane. Because of this, I was traumatized and did not like being around any dogs. But I allow my little girl to give me kisses and lick my face all the time. I love being with her. She has been a huge support in my life. She is a member of our family and I make decisions about where we can go depending on if she is also welcomed. We named her Wrigley after the Chicago Cubs ballpark named Wrigley Field. I have always loved my Cubbies and Wrigley wore a Cubs scarf last fall when the Cubs became the 2016 World Series Champions! Wrigley has been my little champion for 5 years! Our backyard is Wrigley's Field and she loves it! She has such a gentle spirit and kind face! Everyone who sees her loves her! The little kids in the neighborhood ring our doorbell and ask us, "Can baby Wrigley come out to play?" They think she is a puppy because she is so small. They are very careful not to hurt her. Wrigley is a joy to all ages!
Hi there Cindy. Have to agree with you about Yourkies, my wife and I have a female (not spade yet my wife wants to have a litter first) . She is actually my wife's dog but she's with me the most. I'm retired and my wife still works (there is quite an age gap between us..I'm 17yrs older..in my 60's lol) we named her Ruby because she's such a jewel lol. Ruby is so lovable, cuddly, smart, doesn't ever seem to run out of energy lol. She's just under 14 months old and just finished changing to an adult lol. I tell ya I think I'd be lost without her. She loves kids, loves cuddling. We had another dog a poodle terrier and I didn't think there was any dog like Jake. They sure do steal your heart eh. The poor fella passed last October. The short time he had with Ruby he taught her to lift her leg to pee lol, to play and when to let him rest...he was 17 our years so h was loosing his hearing, sight and hips were getting bad. Everyone we know loved good ole Jake & he was so good to Ruby, we were worried he would be jealous but nope not at all. We have several friends want a pup if Ruby has babies. Have to find a partner yet. We're not doing it to make a profit, my wife wants to give 3-4 pups away the person has to pay for their needles etc after a litter I think she wants to get her spade. Trying to get her used to traveling in the car now too. Ok that's all for now, sorry for the long reply but hey think we're all like this when we love our pets eh lol....a big part of our family's....all the best to y'all
