Keeping Your Dog Safe and Happy in the Water

With summer fun all about the pool, the beach, and the water park, with your dog; now is an excellent time to revisit water safety rules.

Do you have a fur baby? Dogs love to splish-splash in the cool water so here are a few rules just for them!

Believe it or not, not all canines know how to do the “dog paddle!” If you want your dog to participate in water activities, start off by slowly introducing him to shallow water. Have one person stand with the dog, and another encouraging him to move forward. Praise your pup for venturing forth into the water, and use a favorite treat as a reward. As you gauge your dog’s comfort level, gradually increase the distance and depth that he feels comfortable wading in.

If your dog goes boating with you, he needs (and deserves!) a life vest. A vest is also a good tool to use when you’re introducing your dog to the water. The vest should be a bright color, and have reflective strips for better visibility.

If your dog will be spending time in or around a pool this summer make sure he knows how to get out safely. It’s all too easy for a dog to panic when trying to exit the water, which can result in exhaustion and possible drowning. Show your dog where the pool steps are, and climb in and out with him until he can do so on his own (treats are a great motivator!).

Although your dog might not mind the taste or realize the danger, don’t allow him to drink pool, lake, ocean, or river water. Parasites and chemicals can make your four-legged friend ill and lead to diarrhea and vomiting. Instead, always have fresh, clean water on hand to stave off heat stroke and dehydration.

Do you know the signs of heat stroke? Difficulty breathing, excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting are all warning signs that your dog is overheating and headed toward a possible collapse. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms, immediately place him in the shade on top of a wet towel, spray him with cool water, and provide plenty of drinking water.
