Do’s When Traveling with Dogs

There is no question that bringing your dogs on vacation with you can help enhance the fun and alleviate the worry of what may happen to your pet while you are away. However, before you depart with your four-legged friend, you need to do your homework to make sure they will be happy and well cared for the entire time.

Remember, cars and planes aren’t designed with your dog in mind. As a result, you need to know what to expect when you arrive at your final destination. When you plan ahead of time, you and your dog will be prepared for the travel experience.

Crating Your Dog

While you may feel bad about having to crate your dog, it is actually something that will ensure they feel and are safer during the travel. Some tips that can ensure your dog doesn’t mind the crate include:

  • Make sure they are well exercised before going into the crate.
  • Don’t leave anything in the crate that may hurt them, such as loose collars or leashes.
  • Remain positive and don’t let the crate feel like a prison. Don’t shove them in, instead let them go in and get comfortable before closing the door.
  • Return in 15 minutes. Do this several times before you actually depart so your dog doesn’t feel like you are abandoning them.

Driving with Your Dog

It is best to have your dog in the crate while you are driving. This will reduce distractions and make the ride safer for you both. Also, don’t feed your dog while you are moving, this could result in a mess from motion sickness. Make sure to take breaks frequently and let your dog out to use the bathroom and stretch their legs.

Remember never to leave your dog alone in a parked car – especially if it is warm outside. Even when the window is cracked your vehicle can quickly turn into an oven.

It is also a good idea to bring along a few items your dog finds comforting. This may be a toy, blanket or something else entirely. The key is to ensure they remain calm and happy. When you use the tips here, you and your dog can have a great time while on vacation.
