Are Senior Dogs in Shelters Getting the Love they Deserve?

Did you know that senior dogs make up the bulk of the four-legged friends that are put down in animal shelters every year throughout the U.S? As sad as those statistics might be, it’s worth noting that there may finally be a change occurring throughout the States.

Instead of sticking to the mantra that younger dogs are better, owners are starting to consider older dogs as the solution that they need to introduce love and friendship to their households. After all, senior shelter dogs constantly prove that they have plenty of love to give.

The Tables are Turning for Senior Dogs

A new study by the Grey Muzzle Organization suggests that more homeowners than ever before are beginning to open up their doors to senior dogs. The survey gathered data from 30 different rescue groups, including organizations that found homes for more than 18,000 dogs last year, including almost 4,000 seniors.

Based on hands-on experience, the survey respondents commented that the situation for senior dogs has seen some improvement over the past couple of years. The survey respondents found that no dog was more loving or grateful than a senior, and as more people are beginning to discover just how wonderful these dogs are, more old pups are getting the second chance they need.

In total, 80% of the groups that were surveyed reported some positive changes in the public perception of senior dogs. The biggest reason why people are beginning to choose older dogs is that they want to do the right thing and give a dog support after he or she has begun to grow older.

This new trend of adopting older dogs could be a wonderful thing for everyone involved. After all, more senior dogs adopted means more older pooches spending their last years in the comfort of a warm and loving home!
