If you ever watched the Boston Marathon or competed in it, you might have met Spencer the Golden Retriever, a Therapy Dog. Usually accompanied by his buddy Penny, this year he was named the official dog of the 126th Boston Marathon. However, the best news is that he fell ill with cancer but kicked it to the curb and reappeared after a hiatus to help the runners.
Spencer the Golden Retriever is a very familiar face to runners in the marathon. In fact, countless photos of them posing with the pooch made it to social media over the years. How many heartwarming stories could the competitors tell you about their encounter with him?
Probably millions. You see, he’s been a regular at the race since 2015. 2020 was canceled because of the covid pandemic. Then last year, it was limited. Spencer was there in his trademark yellow raincoat. But in 2022, he was there again with the title of Official Dog of the Boston Marathon after he survived cancer.
The Boston Marathon is another example of a faithful and courageous dog that warms the hearts of readers and runners. The popular pooch and his sidekick Penny have their own page on Facebook with over 7K likes and over 9K followers. Spencer doesn’t confine his caring activities to runners at the marathon, and he and Penny often visit the elderly, the sick, and schools in their roles as therapy dogs.
The Boston Marathon Therapy Dog Spencer Beat Cancer
The Boston Marathon runners really appreciate seeing the dog who holds up his own flag to announce his presence. Many of them simply might not make it through without then caring therapy dog to give them comfort and encouragement. Actually, in May, Spencer and Penny also made it to the annual Hummingbird 5&10k charity run. So, he’s a familiar face to many people.
The Boston Marathon runner might have thought that Spencer the Golden Retriever would never reappear after his brush with cancer. However, he’s better and back and gives hope to tens of thousands of people. Powers told My Modern Met, “Miraculously, he’s still here with us, and an even bigger miracle, he was strong enough to go to the marathon.”
