Patron, a Jack Russell mine-sniffing dog in Ukraine has been awarded a medal by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In fact, both Patron and his handler were celebrated for detecting more than 200 explosives since the Ukraine war began. Now, the brave dog is considered a symbol of resistance against Russia in its ongoing invasion of the country.

Patron the mine-sniffing Jack Russell gets an award

In recent weeks, there have been many heartwarming stories about Ukraine servicemen rescuing dogs, left homeless by the Ukraine war. Meanwhile, in many cases, they have returned the dogs to their grateful owners. In other news, a world champion sled-dog racer teamed up with a US woman to move stray dogs to safety in Poland.

It is now time to credit a Jack Russell mine-sniffing dog that has no doubt saved hundreds of people’s lives during the ongoing war. Due to his efforts, Patron is now considered a symbol of resistance against Russia, leading to Ukraine’s president taking note.

In a ceremony in Kyiv, Patron was awarded a medal by Volodymyr Zelenskyy for detecting more than 200 explosives since the war began.

National symbol of Ukraine’s resistance against Russia

The two-and-a-half-year-old Jack Russell, Patron, whose name means “ammo” in Ukrainian, has been busy at work in the north-eastern city of Chernihiv. He not only sniffs out explosives but also acts as a mascot for Ukraine’s state emergency service. In fact, he is now a national symbol of Ukraine’s resistance against Russia. Moreover, he regularly features on Ukraine’s social media channels. Naturally, his story is also gaining traction on social media around the world.

As noted by the New York Times, in a news conference in Kyiv, Ukraine President Zelenskyy presented Patron and his owner Mykhailo Iliev with their awards. Zelenskyy was joined by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who made a surprise visit on Sunday. One cute touch was when Trudeau patted his pockets, as though looking for dog treats for Patron. Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy made a moving speech:

“Today, I want to award those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines. And together with our heroes, a wonderful little sapper – Patron – who helps not only to neutralise explosives, but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where there is a mine threat.”

Patron likely received plenty of treats following the ceremony as an extra award for his life-saving work. Kudos to this hardworking and loyal Jack Russell.
