Abandoned Dog Wins South Yorkshire Police ‘Animal Of The Year Award’
An abandoned stray dog was found wandering the streets of Bradford in West Yorkshire in August 2021. While the dog was microchipped, his registered owner ignored all contact and obviously didn’t want Buzz. This led to the pup ending up a Cliffe Kennels in Barnsley, where he was handed to the South Yorkshire Police as he showed potential as a police dog. Now, he is an award-winning police dog after his first year of service.
Abandoned dog becomes award-winning police dog
After being abandoned and unloved, a dog’s life has significantly changed. In fact, Buzz has gone from being a stray to a “much-valued member” of a policing family. Meanwhile, PD Buzz has already completed his first year of service by winning an award. Moreover, he has won South Yorkshire Police’s Animal of the Year award, after excelling in his policing career.
With his partner PC Ashley Green, PD Buzz has excelled in a number of situations. These include detaining prolific criminals, locating property and people, as well as protecting his “partner in crime” PC Green.
According to the South Yorkshire Police website, PD Buzz has been instrumental in 26 arrests, 38 searches for missing people and 71 pursuits.
In one example in October 2022, PC Green and PD Buzz were called to a woman in distress on Sheffield Street. When PD Buzz picked up her scent, he led PC Green to a nearby address, where it was clear the woman was being threatened by an aggressive man. PC Green quickly detained the man and the woman was taken to safety.
PD Buzz made to be a police dog
According to Buzz’s handler, PC Green, the dog has gone from strength to strength over the past year, showing that he was made to be a police dog.
Green explained that he joined the dog section in 2021 and was partnered with PD Buzz in 2022. From the start, their relationship was strong and Green trusts Buzz to protect him. PC Green added:
His rough start in life hasn’t impacted on his loyalty and power to protect, we respect each other and face everything as a team.
Our first year has been amazing, I believe I have the best job in the world, spending every day with my best friend. I am looking forward to what the next chapter of our career holds.
Congratulations to PD Buzz for his well-earned award. We wish PC Green and his best friend a great future together.
