Chiweenie Facts

Crossbreeds have never been more popular, and it seems that every day there’s a new loveable mix to consider bringing home. Have you heard about the Chiweenie? Just like its endearingly cute name, the Chiweenie is an adorable Chihuahua Dachshund Mix.

Also known as the, “Mexican Hotdog,” the playful Chiweenie appears to have inherited the best of both breeds. With its elfin good looks and affable personality, the Chiweenie is a good choice for older kids, families, and single people looking for companionship.

If you’re planning a new addition to your family, here are some facts to consider about the Chiweenie.

Don’t let the diminutive body fool you: the Chiweenie has a fierce protective streak that makes it an excellent watchdog. Chiweenies are vigilant dogs and like to bark when something or someone approaches their territory.

Chiweenies are notoriously stubborn and independent, so don’t be surprised if you discover the need for professional training where elimination habits are concerned.

Although they like to be autonomous they also have a great desire for attention, so plan on having a constant companion if you choose a Chiweenie.

Tiny Chiweenies don’t mind small apartment spaces! But do plan on taking your dog out regularly for exercise and fresh air, remembering to protect their gentle constitutions from the rain and cold.

Keep in mind that Chiweenies have sensitive bodies, so be alert around small children who may play rough with your dog. This mixed breed’s paws are fragile like a Chihuahua’s, and its back is vulnerable like the Dachshund’s.

Because of their parentage, Chiweenie pups rarely look alike. They come in tan, white, brown, blond, and mixtures of all of these colors. Their coats tend to be short to medium length, and vary in texture from silky to rough.

I love my chiweenie Jude, he was not stubborn he has always just wanted to make me happy but he demands a lot of attention and gets jealous very quickly. I admit I have spoiled him rotten he will be 7 in September and I feed him with a baby spoon and he has his own room in my house but I have never met any living thing I love more.

Mr. Weenie, thinks I have to carry him around all the time. He will set behind me and cry if I don’t pick him up. He’s a dapple…and those little sad eyes, are different colors. Now Bonnie, she’s the runt, but feel of life and sponk, oh did I mention, she’s she loves to roll her brother Mr. Weenie. She’s so little, she’s brown and tan.

    1. DARREL LEDEE says

Mine are the same way too! I have a brother and sister; the sister is the runt, the Male is the stubborn one! The female demands lots of attention! She’s my shadow, and very jealous!

Love, love, love my Chiweenie !!! She has a great temperment, usually calm and relaxed. She is a good watchdog and will bark when people are near the house. I even take her in my purse in the shopping cart in to stores all the time. Many people come up to her and want to pet her all the time. She’s good with that except for excitable children, then she tends to get a bit stressed, but othereise is a very affectionate loving and cuddly dog. I highly recommend a Chiweenie, except for families with young children.

  4. Nacho's Momma says

I have two ChiWeenies, Nacho and Tater Tot. The description above is accurate -sweet, playful, stubborn, and protective of their “pack.” I was never a fan of small dogs but these two have won me over. I can’t imagine my life without them.

Tinker Bell (Tinker ), has been a great little companion. She’s about a year old now and full of life. Some times more than you can handle. We enjoy her so much. She is very protective and also very spoiled. You can’t help but spoil them.

  6. Christine says

Mine is that stubborn stubborn who may need professional help with “elimination” we are going on three months of working on potty training. On The plus side he is a snuggle bug.

I loved your article. I had a beloved Chaweenie that was the love of my life! She was gotten for me after a rough divorce and filled a huge void in my life as well as gave such unconditional love. She saved my life in more ways that one. It was my experience that Chaweenies are exceptional dogs. They are smart, strong, great companions, I could go on forever. But thank you again for sharing your page and letting me share my memories of my precious Anshin.

  8. Tina says

I loved my chiweenie. Dexter had long hair and he was such a cuddle bug.

  9. Jan Fields says

I have an adorable one year old female that weighs seven pounds. She is black and tan like mama doxie. Highly intelligent, playful, sweet natured, and so loyal and protective. Seems like she never takes her eyes off of me. Her name is Maggie, but if she gets into trouble, it’s Maggie Sue. One of the best dogs i have ever had.

  10. Patti says

I have a lillypad. She is a snuggled and I love her butt wiggle when she walks.

  11. Ginger Shelton says

Opal is my new companion… and I just adore her. She is only 6 months old and needs to chew on everything in sight. We now have a mountain of ragged toys and chew treats. She is very protective and a wonderful guard dog. No one is allowed in HER yard without hearing about it!
She has so much personality and loves the neighbor children.
The potty training is going very well. And when I have to leave her at home she uses her training pad and accidents are very rare.
She is very intelligent and only is a bit stubborn when she gets excited. I’m sure as she gets older she will calm down a bit. She is just a puppy, after all.
The funniest thing about Opal is that she wants to shower with me! She would rather be in there getting wet than be away from me for even that short amount of time. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a dog like that?

  12. Roxanne says

My loveable Chiweenie, Teddy, is a wonderful addition to my family. Folks thought I was crazy to get a puppy at this stage of my life but I couldn’t be happier. Yes, he follows me everywhere. Yes, he barks a lot (and I mean a lot). Yes, he was difficult to potty train. But, it is all worth it. I could never have asked for a more loyal companion.

  13. CAM Griswold says

Love my 1 1/2 yr. old brindle colored Stanley. He’s smart, feisty and so protective of me. He’s always ready to play with his squeaky toys (all day).

  14. ChiweenieMomma says

Our Chiweenie, Katie Scarlett, is a total roughneck. If you saw she and her older sister Guinness (Doxiepin) playing, you’d think you were at a dog fight. Nothing at all fragile about our 13 pound Chiweenie! She’s also a sweet mommas girl with super foul sewer breath.

    1. DARREL G LEDEE says

      My two, does the same!

I have a 4 year old Chiweenie I got from the animal rescue when she was only 4 months old. She is extremely smart. She loves to learn new tricks. She rings bells by the door when she wants to go out, she knows where I keep her “cookies” so goes to that cabinet when she wants one. She knows how to dance. Play hide & seek, my son hides her treats & she finds them.. she’s definitely a lap dog. I taught her to chose things. Even which lease she wants to wear. And to tell me “YES”, she touches her nose on my nose. I taught her to say “mama” & “brother”. She loves people… but is protective if they are coming on our property unless she knows them…. We adore her so much

My Disney is a mini Chiweenie. Black and Tan, 6 lbs. He is my protector but he learns to love others slowly. My 5 year old Grandson is trying so hard to befriend him. He loves the girls but struggles with males. Snuggles under the covers with me and waits patiently for me to get up to let him out and feed him. We are heading to the Vets but he’s started to lose his hair. Is anyone else experienced this. I’m very concerned.

I adopted my 7lb ChiWennie Tiny, when she was 4-5. She came to us with no training what-so-ever. in about 8 months she learned all the necessary commands, including the bathroom that she finally discovered is located outside.
She LOVES to cuddle full body under a blanket, if ones not available she will tunnel under your shirt. There are only 2 activities for them. They are either cuddlebugs or she runs around like a puppy, even at 5 yrs old.
Tiny does not really bark in the house, only at chosen dogs on our walks. She gets along with most other dogs and is infatuated but afraid of cats.
I recommend this breed for anyone looking for a small dog that will love to be with you all the time. I don’t recommend toddlers around, even though mine is fine with them I do worry about their small stature and injury with small children trying to pick them up or pull on her legs.

  20. Cassandra G says

Stanley is my heart. He’s a brindle color black/brown. My niece fostered him n litter mates with my help. He’s smart, active, a vocal watchdog, brave, and a lovey cuddler. My shadow for sure. He has an overbite of an inch but can catch anything in a flash. Squeaky toys are his favorite. He carries a squeaky ball with him everywhere. Loves to go bye-bye. He’s my companion baby boy.
