Why Does My Dog Pant A Lot?As a dog owner, you know that all dogs pant, some more than others. This is the way that dogs cool their body, so you will often seem them panting when they are hot, when they are excited and when they are running around the yard. Normal panting is fine, but it becomes a problem when they do it more than usual.

Breed Disposition

There are some dog breeds that just naturally pant a lot, especially those who tend to have breathing conditions. This includes Bulldogs, Boxers, Pugs, Bullmastiffs, Pekingese, Shih Tzu and Boston Terriers.

Obesity

One of the most common causes of excessive panting in dogs is obesity. The reason for this is that dogs who are obese will overheat more. Also, dogs that are obese get tired quickly, so exercise will make them pant more than usual.

Heatstroke

When dogs become overheated, they will increase their panting. Once a dog’s body temperature reaches 109 degrees or higher, heatstroke results. Besides heavy panting, other signs of heatstroke include increased thirst, dark red tongue, increased pulse and glazed eyes. Heatstroke require immediate veterinary attention.
