Why Dogs Help Children to Develop Social Skills

Has your child been begging for a puppy recently? The chances are if you haven’t heard those pleas for a pet yet, you’ll start to hear them soon – perhaps after your child meets his first dog through a friend, or in the park.

Although looking after a dog can be a lot of hard work, if you have the means to take care of one, it may be something you should consider carefully. While dogs make huge messes, cost money, and need to be walked all the time, they also teach responsibility and could have a significant impact on your child’s social and emotional development too!

The Scientific Evidence

Science has proven that dogs can help to improve social skills in children. In other words, if you have a kid that’s naturally very isolated, shy, and reserved, a dog could help to get them out of their shell. One study comparing children with dogs to children without dogs, found that pet owners were significantly more social and empathetic. The stronger their attachment with the dog, the better the impact was.The same study also discovered that children who had high levels of attachment with their pets reported positive feelings about their home and family, compared to those with low attachment to pets.
