Let’s face it, this summer is hot, hot, hot and we must be aware of the dangers of heat exhaustion or heat stroke for us and our four-legged friends. We know our dogs love to get out and about, but we also know we have to keep them cool in this extreme heat. Let’s explore the best ways to keep your dog cool this summer.

1. Walking your dog in the summer

Dogs aren’t as able as we are to cope in the heat of summer, so we need to plan our walks to ensure they are comfortable and safe. As the mercury rises, it is always best to take a gentle walk early in the morning, or late in the evening. Along the way, ensure there are places to rest for a while in the shade.

However, like us, dogs do need to pee regularly. Those with a garden have no problem, as their four-legged pal can nip outside to do his business. However, for apartment dwellers, this can be a major problem. Do a bit of investigation to find out which areas are shady at certain times of the day. Once you find a suitable route, take your dog out briefly to relieve himself or herself in the shade.

2. Always keep water handy

Dogs need fresh water available all year round, but especially in summer. When taking them for a walk, ensure you have a bottle of water and a small bowl ready for them to drink from. Always ensure that your pet has access to fresh water at all times.

3. Protect your dog’s paws

Bear in mind that tarmac or sand gets really hot in the summer and can damage your dog’s paws. The best way to check if the surface is suitable, check it with your own bare feet. If the heat is uncomfortable, try to stick to shaded and grassy areas.

4. Don’t leave your dog in a hot car

Dogs love nothing more than an exciting trip in the car. However, leaving them alone in a hot car can be fatal. Even if the car is parked in the shade with windows open, they are likely to get uncomfortable quickly. If possible, avoid taking your dog in the car on a hot day.

However, if you must, ensure the car is thoroughly cooled with air conditioning before letting your canine pal climb in. In that case, always ensure you have water handy for your dog during the journey.

5. Watch out for signs of heatstroke

When dogs overheat they can suffer heatstroke – this comes when your dog can’t reduce his or her body temperature and it can be fatal. Bear in mind that elderly, flat-faced and thick-coated dogs are particularly at risk of heatstroke. According to the Battersea website, should your dog suffer any of the signs below, it will require urgent veterinary treatment.

  • Heavy panting
  • Lethargy
  • Confusion or loss of coordination
  • Drooling or foaming at the mouth
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Shaking or weakness
  • Seizures

Meanwhile, when contacting the vet, ensure your dog is in a cool, shady area and keep them calm. Place the dog on a cooling mat, or cool wet towel, or place them in front of a cooling fan. Only allow your pet to drink small amounts of water. Meanwhile, pour cool water over its feet, ears and head, but never use icy water as this can lead to shock.

Take care and have a great summer with your dog!
