Johanna Carrington grew up in an orphanage in war-torn Germany and never had the chance to have a dog. However, according to her daughter Debbie, she has been making up for lost time ever since.

The 100-year-old has enjoyed the company of several dogs over the years. Among them was the crazy and adorable time when she and her late husband had eight Pekingese. However, after her previous canine pal, Rocky passed away, Johanna said her home was “quiet and sad” until recently. Now an 11-year-old Chihuahua mix dog named Gucci has “brought joy into the house.”

Speaking of the new addition to her home, Johanna said he saw her sitting on her chair and jumped up and sat on her lap. She added:

He made himself very, very comfortable. He was just our baby right away.

Adopting a dog

As noted by TODAY, Carrington found her home very quiet following the death of her previous dog, Rocky. Meanwhile, when she told her daughter Debbie, 64, she wanted to adopt another dog, they were concerned. They worried that a dog shelter might not allow a woman of her advanced age to adopt a pet.

However, a neighbor, who volunteers for Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, thought they might be able to help. In fact, the dog rescue even has a Seniors for Seniors program to make perfect matches. In this case, they had Gucci (previously Gnocchi), who had recently been rescued from a hoarding situation with 22 dogs.

In fact, the 11-year-old senior dog seemed perfect to be the only dog in a household where he would get all the love and attention.

Meanwhile, as part of the adoption process, Johanna’s caregiver, Eddie Martinez, agreed to take the senior dog for daily walks and to help with his care.

On September 2, the little dog’s foster parent took Gucci to meet Carrington and he immediately settled down and made himself at home. Johanna said it was remarkable; he came to the house as if he had been there before. In fact, he was their baby right away.

Meanwhile, Carrington is planning something fun with Gucci to celebrate her 101st birthday in December. Speaking of her longevity, she said her healthy lifestyle helps, as she has never smoked a cigarette or taken a sip of alcohol. However, Johanna definitely believes that spending time with pets is one of the secrets to a long, happy life, adding:

Animals bring so much happiness in our home. It’s unbelievable.

We fellow dog lovers have to agree and wish Johanna and Gucci many happy years together.
