A Rhodesian ridgeback mix dog by the name of Stanford was facing being euthanized at an East Texas animal shelter. This was scheduled after the pup had donated blood to save other dogs at the shelter. Stanford had been there too long, and the shelter planned to euthanize him to make room for another dog. Fortunately for the pup, a nonprofit animal rescue center saved him and three other dogs on the list.

Stanford rescued from euthanization

The two-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback mix dog was facing being euthanized due to the length of his stay at the open-intake shelter.

Speaking to WFFA, a spokesperson for the Smith County Animal Shelter explained that Stanford had been at the shelter too long without finding a home. For this reason, the shelter planned to euthanize him to make room for another dog.

The station called for someone to give the pup a new home, due to his status as a “hero dog.” Amber Green, a supervisor with the animal shelter, said, “He is a hero dog. He has donated blood to the animal emergency clinic to save another life of a dog.” However, clearly, that wasn’t being taken into account when the shelter planned to put the dog to sleep. In their defense, Green added:

It’s nothing that none of us want to do, we would rather get them out to a home or a rescue.

Viewers react to Stanford’s story

After WFFA shared the video on YouTube, viewers were quick to respond. One wrote, “Please let us know if he is adopted or not. I cannot believe that the persons whose dog was saved using Stanford’s blood could not take him home too. That is so so sad.” Another commented, writing, “Save Stanford and get yourself a big bundle of unconditional love!”

However, another viewer noted that no dog actually donates blood, writing:

No dog ‘donates’ blood – it is just ‘taken’ and that makes it even more sad that this poor HERO dog, having been ‘used’ in this way is now in danger of losing his own life at only 2 1/2 yrs old to make way for another dog to have his kennel. Sorry but I can’t ‘like’ this story. I can only hope someone can save his life before it’s too late.

Fortunately, Let Love Live, a nonprofit animal rescue service saved Stanford, as well as three other dogs on the euthanasia list at Smith County Animal Shelter. while these dogs had a happy ending, it is scary how close the hero dog was to leave this world.
