Samoyed

If you fancy a mammoth, snow-white canine as a companion, look no further than the Samoyed. This furry behemoth is named for the native Samoyedic people from Siberia. The massive herding dog actually has two fluffy layers of fur, which helped it to survive brutal Russian winters. Also known by the name Bjelkier, these friendly giants were originally used to herd reindeer!

Newfoundland dog

To say that the Newfoundland dog resembles a small, shaggy bison is an understatement! The animals come in shades of black, brown, or white-and-black and were once bred as a working companion for fishermen in the Dominion of Newfoundland. Not surprisingly, these dogs, with their muscular stature and webbed feet, make superb water rescue animals. Like the Samoyed, Newfoundlands also have a double coat. These gentle giants are treasured for their loyalty, calm disposition, and intelligence.

Great Dane

The Great Dane is named for its outsized, extremely tall body. It’s a German breed and is also known as a German Mastiff. Remember the loveable crime-fighting cartoon canine, Scooby-Doo? He was a Great Dane! We don’t know if a Great Dane named Zeus was a sleuth, but he holds the record for being the tallest of his breed, coming in at a whopping 44 inches from paw to shoulder.


Tibetan Mastiff

Resembling a hairy cross between a brown bear and a lion, the Tibetan Mastiff is an unbelievably huge dog breed. Today local Tibetan tribes take advantage of its size by using it to protect their sheep from tigers, wolves, bears, leopards, and bears.

Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound is a domestic breed from Ireland. This gorgeous giant wasn’t named for its appearance, but because it was once used to hunt wolves. Standing on two legs, Irish wolfhounds can easily tower over their human counterparts!
