Why Does My Dog Cough?

Dogs seem to make all types of noises and some of them you probably can’t even identify if you tried. But, what about if your dog coughs? Dogs can cough for a variety of reasons, just like we do.

Kennel Cough

If your dog is generally healthy, but suddenly starts to cough, it is likely kennel cough is the cause. Kennel cough is easily identified by a dry, hacking cough. It is normally caused by a viral or bacterial virus and it is extremely contagious. It got its name because it is mainly spread in areas where dogs are in close quarters, like a dog kennel or dog park. Usually medical intervention is not necessary and goes away on its own with 10 days to two weeks.

Foreign Objects

If your dog has something stuck in their throat, like a stick, they may cough to try and dislodge the object. In this case, you may notice a gagging sound alongside the cough. Your dog may be able to cough up whatever is stuck, but if not, a trip to the veterinarian is needed.

Tracheal Collapse

Tracheal collapse is mainly seen in smaller dog breeds like Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Havanese, Pekingese, Poodle and Maltese. In the case of a tracheal collapse, you will notice a cough that sounds a lot like a goose honking. Treatment for tracheal collapse includes medication, or surgery, in severe cases.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia produces a coughing sound that is wet and phlegmy. Your dog will likely also show signs of laboured breathing. In this case, you need to call your veterinarian right away so your dog can be seen and given a course of treatment. Pneumonia can either be bacterial or fungal. Bacterial pneumonia is normally treated with lots of fluids and antibiotics. Fungal pneumonia may be treated with anti-fungal pneumonia medications or inhalation therapy, in the event your dog doesn’t respond to the medication.
