Pebbles Nabs Guinness World Record For Oldest Living Dog

In late April, we shared the story of the Guinness World Record holder, TobyKeith, and gave up the secrets to his longevity. However, now, the poor Chihuahua has been knocked from the top spot by a 22-year-old toy fox terrier named Pebbles.
22-year-old Pebbles gets Guinness World Record
A female toy fox terrier from South Carolina has taken the Guinness World Record for being the oldest dog in the world. Meanwhile, at 22 years and 66 days, Pebbles nabs the title from a 21-year-old Chihuahua named TobyKeith.
Pebbles came into this world on March 28, 2000, and has officially been certified the oldest living dog by the Guinness Book of Records. However, it turns out nabbing that honor didn’t come without controversy.
How Pebbles got the record

Pebbles’ owners, Bobby and Julie Gregory of Taylors, South Carolina, didn’t realize that the puppy they took in more than 20 years ago was eligible for the award. However, a group of their friends and relatives alerted them.
“Bobby was sitting on the couch and he started getting texts and calls about a story about a 21-year-old dog that got the record,” Julie told the Guinness World Records organization.
They then learned about a Chihuahua named TobyKeith (pictured below), born January 9, 2001, in Greenacres, Florida, who won the record at the end of April. Julie said that when she saw the TobyKeith story all over the news, she applied to Guinness.

No doubt, the former record-holder’s owner Gisela Shore, was disappointed. She had rescued the Chihuahua from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue after an elderly couple gave him up because they couldn’t care for him anymore. While the pup was previously called Peanut Butter, Shore later changed it to TobyKeith.
Pebbles the night owl
Speaking to Fox, the Gregory family said that Pebbles tends to be a “night owl.” In fact, during the day she is usually sleeping while sunbathing by the pool.

According to Bobby, she usually awakens at four or five in the afternoon for her dinner and stays up the rest of the night. Meanwhile, Bobby and Julie said that to celebrate her title, Pebbles enjoyed a bubble bath.
One curious fact is that the average lifespan of a toy fox terrier is 12 to 14 years. Meanwhile, Pebbles has already surpassed that number by eight years. When asked the secret to her longevity, Julie said:
“Treat your pet like family because they are. Give them a happy and positive environment as much as possible, good clean food and proper medical care.”
