How to Get Your Puppy To Stop BitingWhen you introduce a new pet into your home, there may be a few teething problems along the way. One of the main issues that dog owners come across is biting. Young dogs and puppies tend to want to nibble on just about everything they can find. The only issue is the fact that often enough that tends to be your hands or feet!

If your dog keeps biting and chewing you, you need to do something now. The sooner you tackle this bad behavior, the better. Of course, it won’r be all that easy. Here are some of the ways that you can stop your puppy nibbling on you.

Stop playing immediately

If you were playing with your puppy before they bit you, you need to stop it immediately. If you carry on now, they will believe that this behavior is okay. It’s not. Stopping right away sends out the message that something is not quite right. You don’t need to shout or go all over the top here. Instead, just keep things simple and quit playing for a moment.

Make sure they have toys

When your puppy is teething, they will want to chew on things. That in itself is quite natural. It’s a painful experience and the act of biting down on something relieves that pain. For that exact reason, you need to make sure that your dog has enough toys to play with and, indeed, chew. That way, they will not need to bite you.

Don’t shout

Your initial reaction when a dog bites you may be to shout at them and tell them off. Don’t make that mistake. Sure, you might get them to quit in the short term, but it could have terrible effects in the long term. When you raise your voice to an animal, it makes them scared and, ultimately, defensive.

Give your puppy a timeout

The chances are that your puppy needs to have some time alone right now. You need to show them that biting is not okay and that it has consequences. One of the best ways to do so is to give them a timeout. Send your pup to an area and make them wait there for a while. It will do them some good.

Avoid waving!

Right now, the very worst thing you could do would be to wave at your puppy! If you do so, you could find that they attack. The reason is simple — waving can look like an aggressive act. Although you don’t mean it that way, your pet may see it like that and bite you more than before.
