How To Prep A Natural Diet For Your Dog

Let’s face it, most pet owners just opt for store-bought dog food out of laziness. When you have a pet, a life, and a job, the very last thing you want to do is waste time with extra cooking, right? But wait a minute, is that the best thing for your dog?

While many of the leading dog food brands provide the nutrition that your pet needs, there’s a whole load to be said for homemade food. If you have a little spare time here and there, you may want to try to make something fresh and natural that your pup can enjoy. Here’s what you need to know before you do anything else.

What can dogs eat?

First of all, let’s talk about what dogs can actually eat. There are a load of things that are suitable for canines that you may not know about. Of course, we all know that cooked meats are a great source of protein, but what other options do you have?

Things such as eggs, fruit and vegetables, and grains are also healthy nutrients for your pets. You should, of course, try a load of different things with your pup before you figure out what works for them. Often enough, dogs have an array of tastes that they like and dislike — much like us humans do.

Can you make you own food?

The short answer is, yes, you can. There are a few rules that you need to stick to, though, when it comes to making some doggy food for yourself. For one thing, you don’t want to overload the meal with meat. Sure, canines love meat, but too much will make them bulky and that’s never a thing that you want.

Instead, vary the things that you put in the food. Experts suggest that a third of the meal should be made up of meat, while the rest should be grains, fruit and vegetables, or eggs. Make sure that the combination is thick and appetizing before giving it to your pet.

What to avoid?

Finally, there are a couple of things that you need to avoid when it comes to making your own dog food. You don’t need to use ingredients such as oil, butter, or milk. These added extras may be harmful to your pup and make them ill in the long run. You should also steer clear of using high-fat ingredients, which could cause your dog to become overweight. Remember, everything should be in small measures!
