How To Teach Dogs Good Manners

Every dog owner out there has an obligation to train their puppy and ensure that it has good manners. The sooner you do this task, the better it will be for both you and your pup! Remember, in their formative years, dogs are highly susceptible to learning new things. That’s what you need to take the time now to teach them well. Here’s what you need to know:

Stop your puppy jumping up you

By their very nature, puppies are excitable little creatures. They just have so very much energy that they can’t stop moving around. When you come through the door, they tend to jump up on you and start begging for attention. The worst thing you can do at this point is reward this behavior.

Rather than giving them the affection that they are begging for right now, you should ignore them. Sure, at first, this will be hard, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile. The last thing you want is for them to get used to getting your attention as and when they want it.

Don’t stand for biting!

If you let your dog get away with biting you, they will do it time and time again. This can fast become a real problem since many dogs tend to get aggressive as they age. That could mean that they become rather dangerous as time goes by. Yikes! That’s the last thing that anyone needs.

So, what should you do when your dog has a little nibble on your hands? Well, don’t smack them or they will get fearful and scared. This may cause them to lash out at you too. Equally, you don’t want to shout at them either. Instead, you should be firm and tell them ‘no’ in a strong and assertive way.

Discourage them from counters

When dogs are small, they tend to want to jump up onto counters and the like. You need to nip this habit in the bud before it’s too late or it could lead to further problems down the line. Trust us, no one wants that!

One of the easiest things you can do is discourage your pup from jumping up on counters or furniture by making sure you never put their toys there. If their chew things are on the table tops, of course they will want to jump there to get them. Plus, if they do show an interest in these surfaces, you should give them a strong ‘no’ too. Easy!
