Cute dog with cat. Love
Several households have both cats and dogs as pets. However, there are a few things that pet owners should know about the difference between cats’ and dogs’ foods.
No matter how well behaved your four-legged friend is, dogs often stray when it comes to tempting items. Dogs often want to eat human food which is not always good for them at all. However, eating cat food can sometimes be just as dangerous if not worse. Sometimes, pet owners have to get very creative when it comes to keeping the dog from stealing the cats’ food. Some may believe that it is harmless for a dog to eat cat food because they are both animals, right? Unfortunately, dogs and cats have very different needs when it comes to diets. Cats nor dogs should be eating each other’s foods for very specific reasons. Much like babies require different foods than adults, the same is true for your furry feline and your lovable canines.
Dr. Jerry Klein, the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Chief Veterinary Officer offers some insights on the different dietary needs of cats and dogs. Whereas cats require meat in their diets, dogs require both meat and vegetables. Dogs may not be harmed by occasionally eating cat food, but there are specific reasons why their food is different. Dr. Klein suggests that if you have both cats and dogs, it is best to discourage them from eating each other’s food. Dogs are drawn to cat food much more than cats are to dog food. But both tend to want to taste the other in a grass is greener sort of way.
There is much more to fighting like cats and dogs than sneaking each other food now and then. There can be an element of danger in either of them relying on the other’s food. The International Cat Association President (TICA) Vicki Jo Harrison talks about the dangers of these food incompatibilities. Harrison states that, While a small amount of stolen dog food will not harm your cat, continually feeding the other’s food can be dangerous to their health and is not advised long term. Dogs, however, love the delicious, high-protein content in cat food.” Just because their foods are similar, they are far from equal. In reality, dog food does not meet the dietary needs of a cat.
Cat food can harm your dogs just as dog food can harm cats. The high protein content of cat food can affect your dog’s liver and kidney causing catastrophic problems. Cats are less likely to eat dog food but can be harmed as well. It is best to keep your furry friends eating the food that is formulated for their dietary needs to keep them happy and healthy.
