Many of us love heartwarming dog stories and this particular story recently went viral on TikTok. The video was posted by the Boonie Flight Project, an organization that flies strays out of Guam and to adopters in the States. They rescued a badly emaciated female dog that had a plastic jar stuck over her head. As soon as the video was posted, the views climbed and have now reached 8 million views on TikTok.
Now named Winnie, a stray dog that was rescued out of Latte Heights in Guam has become an Internet sensation. The hungry and thirsty pup had been found with a plastic jar stuck over her head.
Meanwhile, the Boonie Flight Project in Guam came to the stray dog’s rescue. In fact, the organization works to connect and fly out stray animals to adopters in the USA. According to Stephanie Musick from the organization, they found her in an abandoned lot. She said:
There was a ton of trash in the area. It was littered all the way through the woods and we had to trek through a lot of it to even track her down.
According to Musick, Winnie got her head stuck in a peeled garlic jar while trying to reach whatever was inside it. Then, neighbors started reporting sightings of the dog, wandering around for about a month with her head in that jar. The rescuers explained that Winnie was severely emaciated and was too weak to even eat food or drink water when they were finally able to help her.
Readers can watch the rescue in the TikTok video included here:
Winnie, who is named after a famous bear that gets his head stuck in honey pots, is now on the road to recovery. Once recovered, the organization hopes that she will then be adopted and find a home. According to Musick:
She clearly has been on the streets for a long time and isn’t totally familiar with the home. She’s now learning how comfortable it is to lounge on a couch, how wonderful it is to have a couple fur siblings around, and she’s starting to eat out of her foster’s hand and learning how to appreciate scratches.
While Winnie is safe and will hopefully get a home of her own, there are still many stray animals on the streets of Guam looking for homes. Unfortunately, there are so many, there are not enough people living on the island to adopt them. Meanwhile, as noted by The Guam Daily Post, village mayors have spoken up about safety concerns that come with strays roaming the streets.
Currently, efforts to address the stray dog population largely focus on spaying and neutering. Meanwhile, the Guam Legislature has appropriated $450,000 to the Guam Department of Agriculture this year to handle the problem.
In the meantime, Boonie Flight continues to find homes for rescued animals in the States. The organization was started in April 2021 and hopes to send 1,000 animals off by the end of this year. Musick said how heartbreaking the stray animal problem is on Guam, but noted that many “amazing members of this community” are volunteering their time and money to help.
Of course, the rescue dog’s case reminds us of the horror of discarded plastic garbage around the world. Meanwhile, Winnie is the current luckiest dog on Guam as she gets used to regular feeding, love and friendship with a foster family.
