Dog In Portugal Smashes Oldest Living Dog Record Beating Spike

Bobi was brought up on a farm in Portugal and now holds the Guinness World Record for Oldest Living Dog. While Spike the Chihuahua, 23, was recently given the title, Bobi has well and truly overtaken him at the age of 30 years and 266 days. In fact, Bobi received the award from the Guinness World Records on February 1. Read on to find out more about this loveable senior dog and his family.

Dog in Portugal Guinness’s Oldest Living Dog

It was recently reported that Spike the Chihuahua was certified as the World’s Oldest Living Dog. Maybe Bobi’s owner saw the headlines and decided that his dog, Bobi, rightfully deserved that award.

Bobi lives on a farm in Portugal and not only was he announced as the oldest living dog, but he is also the oldest dog of all time. Clocking in at 30 years and 266 days, this elderly mutt certainly deserves all the attention he can get. As for the proof, the pup was registered at a vet in 1992.

It was only two weeks ago that Spike the Chihuahua received the coveted award. Moreover, before Spike and Bobi, an Australian cattle dog held the title for almost 100 years. In fact, Bluey was close in age to Bobi when he died at the age of 29 years and five months, living from 1910 to 1939.

Bobi and the Costa family

Bobi was born and raised on a family farm in the village of Conqueiros in the Leira District of Portugal, close to the town of Nazare, famous for its surfing waves. Meanwhile, the reason for his survival on the farm is a heartwarming tale in itself. Apparently, the Costa patriarch already had so many dogs on the farm, he decided he didn’t need any more.

Leonel Costa, 38, told the grueling tale, saying:

I was eight years old. My father was a hunter, and we always had many dogs. Unfortunately, at that time it was considered normal by older people who could not have more animals at home to bury the animals in a hole so that they would not survive.

As luck would have it, Costa somehow left Bobi behind when he went to dispose of the litter. Meanwhile, Leonel and his brothers quickly hid the newborn pup from their father. He explained:

We knew that when the dog opened its eyes, my parents would no longer bury it. It was popular knowledge that this act could not or should be done.

By the time their father discovered the puppy, it was already too late. Moreover, despite the fact that their father punished them for hiding the pup, Leonel said it “was worth it.” Personally, we are so shocked by the thought of the animals being treated that way, but it does make Bobi’s record even more worthwhile.

When asked for Bobi’s secret, his humans, the Costa family believe the secret to the pup’s longevity is the fact he lives in the countryside. Apparently, Bobi loves playing with the family’s four cats.

At the age of almost 31 years, the family dog suffers the usual ailments that come with old age. He has problems walking and also has difficulty with his eyesight. Moreover, his food needs to be soaked in water to remove any seasoning before he eats it. It turns out he dines on the same meals as the family. Meanwhile, the Costa family added that Bobi drinks a lot of water.
