New York Pet Shop Dogs & Cats Sales Ban Is Welcomed By Animal Lovers

Pet Shop dogs, cats, and rabbits can no longer be sold in New York. Over the past five years, California, Maryland, and Illinois made similar moves to prevent puppy mills from flourishing. Mind you, some people feel that California’s laws didn’t go far enough to prevent breeders from selling directly to the public. The news about New York was greeted with joy by animal lovers in mid-December of 2022.

Pet Shop Dogs & Cats Are Not Necessary

Way too many pets end up abandoned, and many of them end up in kill shelters. Those fortunate animals that get adopted or fostered are in the minority. Actually, the new law passed in New York seems to be very relevant, especially wiht the festive season already in full swing. Reportedly, many animals purchased as gifts end up in shelters this time of the year. Mind you, buyers won’t be affected just yet as it only comes into effect in 2024.

Pet Shop dogs are more fortunate than those animals bred for research, but at the end of the day, both operations could be seen as being abusive. That’s because of the tremendous number of animals that are euthanized every single day. Despite that, puppy mills churn out more and more animals, often in inhumane conditions. According to AP, the law is “an attempt to target commercial breeding operations decried by critics as ‘puppy mills.”

Pet Shop Dogs & Cats Ban Welcomed?

Not everyone welcomes the ban, and it looks like some stores might even have to close down. After all, pooches seem to be a fast-moving product. However, demand might fall in the future anyway. Many people gave up their lets during the pandemic. And, the idea of climate change and carbon pawprints might be something to think about. Actually, that debate started about the same time as states started legislating the sales of pet shop dogs and cats. But for now, the news is well-received because of the problem of too many abandoned animals.

The Good News Movement / Instagram

Pet Shop dogs and cat sales being banned in New York mostly seems to be taken as very good news on Instagram. When the story was shared by “The Good News Movement” on the platform, 125K people liked the post, and thousands so comments rolled in. The admin cited the announcement, saying, “While the law doesn’t restrict private breeders, it will limit them from selling more than 9 animals per year.” So that news was also cheered.

Reactions By Animal Lovers

Pet Shop dogs and cats not being allowed for sale went down well with animal lovers: not to forget those bunnies.

One commenter said “It is about time. Let people understand the love that is in adoption.”

Another person talked about the puppy mills, saying, “Great, stop the puppy mills too. So many people don’t think a pet is a long and wonderful commitment.🙏🏼👍.”

This comment also stood out: “That’s awesome! Sad it took this long but great to hear! 🙌”
