Dog Abandoned By Homeless Human Gets A Happy Ending

A dog called Lilo was abandoned by her homeless human in Chattanooga as she couldn’t afford to care for her two children and the dog. However, the story had a happy ending, thanks to strangers coming to the rescue of the family and their pet.

On January 20, a dog was discovered, wandering the streets and abandoned by her human. Due to a note that was found on the dog, it was found that Lilo was abandoned when her human became homeless with her two children. Meanwhile, the dog looked happy and healthy, but was scared and obviously missing her human.

However, Lilo was taken to McKamey Animal Center in Chattanooga where strangers reunited the dog with her human via social media.

Lilo carried the note included below, which reads:

My name is Lilo. Please love me. My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with 2 kids. She tried her best but can’t get help. I cost too much for her. She really loves me and I’m a great dog and love to be loved on. Please don’t abuse me.

The note also had the words “Please keep my name.”

The heartbreaking note made it clear that Lilo’s human was in a desperate situation. However, the staff at McKamey Animal Center, saddened by the situation, felt that the abandonment of the dog was unnecessary. In fact, they knew there were resources available that could help the owner keep her dog, despite her difficult circumstances.

Animal shelter reaches out on social media

McKamey Animal Center went on a mission to reunite Lilo and her human while giving them the necessary support. They opened up on Facebook on January 24, sharing a photo of the note and Lilo herself, writing:

We’re here to help and we want to see people and their pets stay together, no matter the circumstance. We offer a community pet food pantry for when times are tough.

We want Chattanooga to be a community where pets are truly family, not just for the economically privileged, but for everyone.

The shelter went on to address Lilo’s owner, writing:

We are so sorry that you had to make the decision to leave [Lilo] behind. We know many folks are struggling to care for their pets right now. We know how hard it must be to give up an animal you so clearly loved because you can’t provide the care she needs. We understand.

Friend comes to Lilo and her human’s rescue

While Lilo’s human didn’t see the Facebook post, someone she knows did and they contacted her. She, in turn, called McKamey Animal Center soon after.

The center was able to verify her identity and that she was, in fact, the dog’s owner. However, to protect her identity and privacy, they wouldn’t share the backstory of the family right now.

However, McKamey Animal Center did share a heartwarming update on Facebook on January 25. They revealed a photo of Lilo and her owner’s loving reunion. Moreover, the center has set up a fund to accept donations to provide food, essential veterinary care and supplies for those facing homelessness who can no longer care for their pets. This way, they hope to prevent similar family-pet separations in the future.

Moreover, the center is working with local partner agencies and nonprofits to help the owner, her children and Lilo. Meanwhile, they are working with local partner agencies and nonprofits in town to help the pair find a pet-friendly homeless shelter and set them up for success to overcome homelessness.

Meanwhile, the shelter said that Lilo would remain in their care until the owner has somewhere to live.
