This is an amazing story about Brittany spaniel dog that was seriously injured. However, he got over his impairment by walking on two legs, just like a human. Meanwhile, Dexter lives happily in Ouray in Colorado with Kentee Pasek and her family. Read on to find out what happened to make this clever pup overcome his disability.
Kentee Pasek and her family live in the small mountain town of Ouray in Colorado. The family had lost an elderly dog the year before and rescued another that had to be put to sleep. This devastated the Paseks so much that when they got Dexter, they poured their love into him. Meanwhile, he quickly got the attention of the children who passed their yard on the way to school.
In March 2016, when Dexter was almost year old, he escaped from the Paseks’ yard and ran in front of a vehicle about a mile away from his home. Tim Pasek found him with his two front legs badly injured. However, as a mountain rescue first responder, he was quick to take action. He called Kentee, who jumped into her car, but was horrified when she saw Dexter’s injuries. The dog was in a lot of pain and they had to get him to the vet right away. However, the closest was an hour’s drive from Ouray.
On arrival, the vet was waiting and was shocked to see Dexter’s injuries, saying he had to call the senior vet. Once he was there, the vet acted quickly and determined that they would have to amputate the Brittany spaniel dog’s right front paw. Meanwhile, the left could be saved, but wouldn’t be fully functional.
Dexter returned home after three days and a lot of surgery. However, the vet believed he could still enjoy a decent quality of life. It took quite some time for him to recover, with Kentee helping with his rehabilitation, building his muscle tone and working on the dog’s mobility.
Kentee told the Guardian that Dexter had to wear cone for a year and the family commissioned a special wheelchair that fitted around his stomach with wheels at the front. This allowed the Brittany spaniel to get around on three legs. As he was still a puppy, he had so much energy, and according to Kentee “just exuded positivity.”
Every morning, Kentee took Dexter out, carrying him down the porch steps without his wheelchair to play in the yard. However, one day, she left him at the bottom of the steps while she went inside to get her coffee.
When Kentee returned outside, she was amazed to find Dexter at the top of the steps. She was dumbfounded, unable to understand how he got there. She decided to put him at the bottom of the steps again to see what would happen.
Within moments, the Brittany spaniel jumped up on his two hind legs and hopped up the steps, which she caught on video. Kentee couldn’t believe it at first but he has been walking on two legs ever since.
Sometimes, the dog uses his front left leg for balance, while sniffing around on three legs. However, if he wants to move fast, he jumps up on his two back legs and runs.
At first, Dexter’s owners were concerned about the pressure on his hips. They still encouraged him to use his wheelchair, but he would just stand up with it attached to his body, which could have caused an injury. Since then, he regularly visits a chiropractor who says his back is strong and his hips are pure muscle.
The Brittany spaniel is now seven and nothing slows him down. Kentee says he is the “most joyful dog” and is “determined and tenacious.” Later, a video taken of Dexter walking was aired on TV making him famous.
His family is very proud of him and he regularly receives letters from people around the world. In fact, the tenacious dog has encouraged people going through difficult situations. They figure, “If Dexter can do it, so can I.”

Besides all the attention, Dexter is still the family’s pet and loves chasing balls, fetching sticks and going to the park. According to the vet, he must have had a serious will to live and is an inspiration to us all.
