As dog lovers know, our furry friends often have great instincts and this was especially so with a mother dog looking for help. She approached a woman in the parking lot of an animal shelter and led her to 16 puppies, hiding behind a fallen log. While the woman was shocked, the mother dog and puppies will have a happy ending.

Mother dog approaches a woman for help

Mitzi Brogdon of Street Dog Rescue & Recovery in Moore, Oklahoma had collected two abandoned puppies on May 7 and was heading home. However, suddenly she saw an English Foxhound standing alone in the parking lot. Brogdon pulled her car over and the dog immediately approached her.

Speaking to the Epoch Times, Brogdon said she scratched the dog behind the ears, and then she started walking up a gravel path towards a radio tower. Meanwhile, the dog kept looking back, making sure she was following her. When Brogdon and the dog (now named Dolly) got to the end of the path, puppies started spilling out from behind a fallen log.

The animal rescuer was shocked to find a total of 16 abandoned puppies, that had been hiding behind the log. However, her shock quickly turned to anger, thinking of how a human could do this to the animals. Brogdon explained:

They were hungry when I found them. Some had pretty big wormy bellies but it seemed like they hadn’t been there for too awfully long. Dolly allowed me to leash her, and the puppies followed wherever I went, like the Pied Piper.

According to Brogdon, there were 14 eight-week-old puppies and two of them were around four months old. Meanwhile, Dolly looked around two years old herself. Most of the younger pups followed her, while the two older pups had to be trapped.

The animal rescuer noted that it would “take a village” to rescue this many dogs at once. However, she arranged with Forever Yours Dog Rescue and 405 Animal Rescue to each take two puppies. Meanwhile, Fuzzy Friends Rescue took five, while Safe Haven Animal Rescue took four of the pups.

As for Brogdon, she took Dolly and three puppies back to Street Dog Rescue & Recovery. She then shared photos of Dolly and the puppies on Facebook, captioning the images by writing:

I would like to think Oklahoma is better than this, but clearly, we are not. They are NOT just dogs and cats. How we treat them says a lot about us.

Mother dog treated and spayed

Following on from the rescue, Dolly was spayed and fully vaccinated. Fortunately, she tested negative for heartworm. However, she did have tick-borne ehrlichia and required antibiotics.

In her various Facebook posts about Dolly, Brogdon described the English Foxhound as “a perfect dog.” She said the pup is affectionate, house-trained and good with other pets and children. At this stage, Dolly is living happily in a foster-to-adopt home.

Meanwhile, the 16 puppies will soon be ready for adoption after they are neutered and have their full dose of vaccines.

Brogdon went on to share a message to dog owners out there, saying, first and foremost, spay and neuter their pets. She went on to emphasize that people should keep their commitment to their pets as they are a lifetime commitment.
