It can be interesting to get feedback from a vet on the best dog breeds to own. However, one vet in Alabama went viral on TikTok after listing those dog breeds she would never own. The list included one fan-favorite canine, which surprised many.

TikTok vet goes viral over dog breeds

Dr. Whitney Terrell of Alabama caused controversy when she posted a TikTok video, listing the five dog breeds she would never own. She stressed that this was a personal choice and that she chose the breeds for their temperaments or the cost of their maintenance.

In the TikTok video, that has attracted more than 8 million views, she named five breeds. At number five was the Chinese crested, then Chihuahuas, any flat-faced breed like Shih Tzus or pugs, German shepherds and Goldendoodles at number 1.

Dr. Terrell explained why she wouldn’t own a Chinese crested or other hairless breeds. She said the dogs themselves are “fine,” but she doesn’t want to own a hairless dog or cat, saying:

They’re zitty [sic], they’re greasy… not for me.

While speaking of Chihuahuas, the good doctor described small breeds like this as “ankle biters.” She said she would more than likely get bit if she had one and that they are usually a one-person dog.

On this breed, Dr. Terrell added:

We’ve got a few [in our clinic] that are just super, super, super sweet. The rest of them are ankle biters.

Flat-faced dogs in general

Speaking of the flat-faced dogs, like English bulldogs, Shih-Tzus and more, the vet said these breeds are at increased risk of breathing problems. Dr. Terrell added that they are also likely to suffer eye and skin conditions as a result of over-breeding.

In June this year, the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in the UK suggested that the breeding of bulldogs could be banned. According to the experts, this should be banned unless improvements are made to breeding practices to avoid the dogs having debilitating conditions.

According to Dr. Terrell, some of the dogs are “so cute, so sweet,” but she wouldn’t own one as,

They can’t breathe. They literally cannot breathe.

However, the good doctor wasn’t finished. She added that flat-faced dogs snore. She says she already has a husband who snores and he is enough.

Meanwhile, she did also note that they suffer from “skin fold dermatitis, allergies, yeasty, smelly, gassy – it’s a no for me.”

The TikTok vet’s next no-no was German shepherds and the Belgian malinois that resemble them. Dr. Terrell did say these breeds do have the potential to be really great dogs.

Despite this, most of those that enter her clinic “want to bite your face off.”

Meanwhile, the vet did stress that this is due to them not being properly trained. For her, she wouldn’t have the time to properly train either of these breeds herself.

It’s a no for Goldendoodles for TikTok vet

Dr. Terrell’s final breed that she would never own is a Goldendoodle. This choice is what made for controversy as the cross-breed between golden retrievers and poodles is very popular.

Finally, Dr. Terrell said she would never own a Goldendoodle, a popular cross-breed between golden retrievers and poodles. Her explanation was that some of these are sweet, but many of them are “crazy, crazy hyper,” and “can’t sit still for two seconds.

Meanwhile, the TikTok vet mentioned that they have also seen some really aggressive Goldendoodles. She said they are just “kind of squirrelly,” and also have ear infections “out the wazoo” and expensive grooming. To Dr. Terrell, this breed is too high maintenance for her and she would rather have a hound dog. Readers can watch the TikTok video here:

Goldendoodle owners react

While, owners of the five breeds were quick to defend their pets in their comments, many of them reacted to the fact that her number one no-no was Goldendoodles. One wrote, “Goldendoodle is literally the best dogs I’ve ever owned and ever been around.” They wrote that they are “Literally like a human and ridiculously smart and sweet.”

Another commented: “I can’t believe the Goldendoodle is your number one! I’m shocked! I’ve had a ton of dogs in my lifetime. This is the best dog ever and best family dog.”

Dr. Terrell received so many comments (24.6K at the time of writing) that she eventually shut them down.

However, the vet did post a follow-up TikTok video, naming the five dog breeds she would own. These choices included Great Pyrenees, German shorthair pointers, golden retrievers, mutts or mixed breeds and Basset hounds.
